Begin your tour at inside the main lobby of Congress Plaza Hotel, located at 520 S. Michigan Ave.This special walking tour digs into how and why the 1893 World's Fair captures imaginations more than any other event in Chicago history.
Unlike other World's Fair tours and Devil in the White City tours that center on facts and trivia, your tour goes a few steps further: accessing archives, studying photos, and designing clue-based games and scavenger hunts to create an excursion that's both insightful and enriching.
During this 3-hour tour you'll travel back in time to experience what life was like during this historic exposition, visiting some of the few remaining buildings that were around during the World's Fair and sampling both food and beer that connects with the era.
Marvel at the colorful mosaics within hotel specifically built for the fair and see the grand lobby of the Auditorium Building ― a multi-use complex that President Benjamin Harrison dedicated to the public in 1889. You'll also get to ride of the last downtown elevators with a human operator, marvel at downtown's last remaining pre-Chicago Fire building, and snack on delicious German eats at the Berghoff Restaurant, a local institution since the late 19th century.
Along the way, you'll learn about the rapid changes in culture that took place around the turn of the century, as well as details on the fair's midway amusement rides and its various cuisines. You'll also learn a few parlor songs to round out the tour.
Approximately 95% of the tour takes place indoors, making it an ideal excursion for all four seasons.
